Hi.
 Looking for assistance from Argos insiders before I return a broken item. It's a small (but expensive) electronic thing I got in October 2005, with a three -year extended warranty. Still have receipts for both purchases. It's completely broken (integrated battery has exploded and deformed casing). I took it back to the store I got it from, and was referred to customer services. Spoke to them on phone and was told it a non-repairable item, and I should return to the store to get a replacement. Local store no longer stocks it (although you can still get it on home delivery). My preference is to get a refund, as there's nothing else from Argos I want for that price (£400+), and I know that I can now buy the same item elsewhere for only £270. Will they try to get me to take vouchers, or should I hold out for them putting the purchase price back on my credit card? Also, can I get a refund for the full warranty premium I paid (since I haven't used any of it)?
Grateful for any advice
Chris

have you tried contacting your local trading standards office...... i am sure there is a website somewhere that lists your entitlements..... ie replacement....etc
i have a feeling that you wont get the warranty money back unless the policy had a special offer on it..... ie i have an extended warranty on a peice of furniture that i paid for, if we dont use the warranty within 10 years we get the money back. but it did state this explicitly in the paperwork i havesmile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

this is kinda down to descretion....
if you can get it on home delivery, see if the store can get it delivered to the store for you, ive done that before for a customer. You may have to speak to the duty manager though as the law isnt too specific on these type of cases. I believe the law says the best possible solution with the least trouble for the customerr within reason.0 -
Hi! If the item has broken due to a manufacturing defect, which was present at the time you purchased it, the store can offer you a repair or a replacement, as it is over 6 months old. I have, however, used my discretion and given a pro-rata refund in similar cicumstances! I don't think you can expect the full purchase price back though, I would expect them to take off 9 months wear and tear off the price! If you bought the breakdown cover from Argos, then you need to contact the Insurers directly who can give you a pro-rata refund on this! You may not have "used" the warranty, but the item has still had the benefit of this cover for the last 9 months. Think along the lines of trying to claim your home Insurance back, as you hadn't made a claim!
My best advice would be to ask them to order the item in for you!0 -
Hi
Thanks for all advice. Glad to report a happy ending - I love my local Argos -
Went down this evening, and despite very hot and busy staff I got a full refund of both original price and full warranty premium, back on my credit card with absolutely no trouble, and without me even having to ask. Turns out it's not in the next catalogue, so they can offer a refund with no trouble it seems. So, excellent result and happy customer!:D
Regards
