Leaving current job for a better one. How much notice to give?

Hi guys I need your advice. I have been working as a nanny for 15 months, they are a lovely family but I feel its time to move on.
I have been looking for new nanny jobs for the last month and have been very lucky to have found one.
The best bit is that it's more money, and the hours are perfect so I have decided to take it. I don't start the new job until end of June/July hasn't really been confirmed but it's def around that time.
Now here comes the tricky bit do you guys think I should let my employer know that I am leaving, bearing in mind that I am not sure what month yet? My contract states that I give them 1 month notice which is pretty normal. But I am thinking that maybe I should let them know now, giving them about 3 months notice for them to sort out interviews and find a new nanny.
You help would be much appreciated.

You need an unconditional offer with a start date before giving notice.
I would wait.
The current employer knows they have one month if you decide to leave if they need more they should have made the notice longer.0 -
While it would be nice to give your current family more time, you need to have a definite offer of the job in writing including the start date before you hand in your notice.

I have been offered the job, yesterday in fact. I am now waiting for the contract to come through. She goes back to work in August, and wants me to start either June or July so that the baby can get used to me etc. So the job is mine.
You guys then think I should wait until I have a date then let my employer know?
I feel a bit bad coz its a pain to interview and finding the right nanny, but I need more money and I can't pass out on this opportunity.Mess0 -

I would wait until you know the start date and the contract is signed before handing in your notice.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Thing is your current employer could for example
1. Offer to match the T&C of the new position.
2. Give you a months notice
3. Accept and start looking then give you a months notice as soon as they find someone.
Do you want to risk being out of work.0 -
She wont match it, its 3 kids and I am only getting £265 NET, whether this new job is offering £320 NET. The oldest kid is 11 and I want to look after some1 younger, so there are lots of reasons for me wanting to leave.
I know my new job is secured, so I am not worried about that. I am just stuck on when is the best time to tell her and how much notice to give her.
I know from experience that employers do refuse to give you a reference, it happened on my last job because when I left it wasnt convinent for them. I want a reference as it's my first nanny job and it would be nice to show it to my new employer althought she was satisfied with my other references.Mess0 -
explain to your new employer that for all the nice reasons you mention you want to give as much notice as poss and ask if for that reason they would ensure you have the contract agreed asap
once it's done then give your notice.MTC NMP Membership #62 - made it back to size 12 after my children & I'm staying here!0 -
Yeah the contract will be with me hopefully at the end of the week or beggining of next week, so hopefully by the end of next week I will be able to give my notice and therefore giving them plenty of time to find someone.
Just hope she doenst refuse me a reference, as she has often said (joking I hope) that me leaving will be very incovinient.Mess0
