This might get moved or whatever but I put a thread on the vent board and got no replies and I need some advice asap,

Long story short: bought some reduced sausage rolls from co op/petrol station, use by 25 July, me and 2 dd's ate most of them and I noticed the last 6 are mouldy, there was 20 in the packet  I know what you might be thinking...(cue longer story)

...Didnt notice straight away as I just opened the pack and put it on the table for us to help ourselves while I put things away from our day out spent with my mum, now I have tasted "off" bread before so I know what mould tastes like and would have noticed but would my girls?? (they are 4 and 5)

I need to know what you would do? I feel disgusted that my kids could have eaten mould, it really turns my stomach....I know it wont kill them but you dont expect this from shop bought ready to eat snacks???

Would REALLY appreciate your views on what to do next, I dont wanna let it go??
TIA
Jen

What date did you buy them?

I would go to the customer service desk at the store and ask to speak to the store manager. Explain to him politely that the sausage rolls are moldly even though they go out of date today (tues) your young children have possibly eaten them, and you are not happy.

Then see what he has to say. If he is a good manager he will give you a full refund, and a replacement. Possibly a goodwill gesture for the inconveience.

If you are not happy escalate it to the head office.

Put them in the post with a polite letter & send them to Co-op head office, perhaps enclosing a copy of the receipt if possible.

Mould won't do you any harm. It's the same kind of "friendly bacteria" that you have to pay a fortune for, in a "probiotic" yoghurt. So don't worry about illness.

In this weather, mould is all the more likely as it loves a warm damp environment.

If you want your money back, then simply return them to the place you bought them.

And never buy this kind of food in a petrol station. The staff are trained to sell petrol first and I strongly suspect that their food hygiene skills are ..... a little lacking.

Please do not post them - in this weather it would be an health hazard for anyone at the post office, and if there were a problem you've no proof where it originated from.

DO telephone today, preferably to head office (it's probable that the cooler is not working properly in this weather, which is why the food went off quicker than normal.) Insist that they check all the product, and you want at least a full refund. You could inform trading standards (via local council).

Regarding the kids. Unless they were ill during the night they should be ok - but do keep an eye on them, as meat products can cause nasty stomach problems. Remember - it is very unlikely - but do react quickly if they do develop stomach problems.

I agree that mould on bread is a probiotic, and in fact does a lot of good - but my concern is the meat.

I do not want to worry you, as it's VERY UNLIKELY that there will be a problem, but you were right to be concerned.

Good point! Agree though, that any reaction would be within a few hours and kids would first have chucked up (sorry) or been in the loo a few times.

The human body is pretty good at expelling any consumed nasties.

Get the kids to drink plenty of water to flush themselves out.

(What a lovely turn of phrase, I have ;) )

I try not to buy food from petrol stations now as well - ever since I bought a bag of chocolate sweets from a service station on the A590 only to find them 12 MONTHS out of date! We were on the M6 on the way home by the time I noticed the date and there was no way OH would turn the car around so I didn't even ask. I no longer buy food for that place even if I'm feeling incredibly ill - I always wait now until Forton Services unless I've already got the food from an Asda/Co-op before we left ;)
