Want to train in massage and need pointers

I want to train for something new and have always been interested in massage , not sure of what field yet ie sports , osteopathy ... I need to know what qualifications are the standard , I have looked locally NR30 area but the only colledge courses for massage are either an intoduction to sport therapy which looks very basic or full time is a beauty therapy nvq course (not really what I am looking for as I am only interested in the massage side)

TBH, I think you would struggle getting a job if you could only offer massage. All of the complementary therapists that I know offer a range of therapies, including reflexology, Indian head massage, reiki, Hopi ear candle therapy, etc. They don't all offer everthing, but they do offer at least four or five therapies.

It isn't a beauty therapy course that you need to look for, it is a complementary therapies course.

I know about six holistic therapists and all are a member of this organisation:

I can think of few 'extras' you could offer, assuming you are female.....

is there someone at the college you can make an appointment with to discuss options with you, they should have information on courses available to you or be able to point you in the right direction. I studied Beauty Therapy many years ago and remember that there was a part time sports therapy course, this included massage, exercise and diet. it was a one year course 1 day a week. You will also have to do Anatomy and Physiology if you want to do massage. If you speak with them they may tell you to do the introduction to sports therapy and take it from there.

You may be very limited with the courses available to you from looking at your location.

Complementary therapies courses have a different focus to sports/remedial massage and osteopathy, and probably aren't suitable for your needs if that's what you want to do.

I'd suggest you contact professional bodies for the fields you are interested in - not sure which for sports massage, but you could try the bodies listed on the London School of Sports Massage website http://www.lssm.com/ to find out what their members do, training requirements and recommended courses. I think LSSM offer their training on weekends.

Osteopathy means you need a degree course. Have a look at the General Osteopathic Council's website info at http://www.osteopathy.org.uk/practice/becoming-an-osteopath/

    Good luck
