Unpaid Car Insurance... What Will Happen??

Long story but will try and explain as best as I can.
Bought a car in March last year and took out an insurance policy with Quinn Direct until 10th March 2010. Paid the last instalment in January 2010 and should have had no more payments to make.
I have two address which I used during this period (one's my Mum and one's my Dads). I took out the policy at my Dad's (both as postal and vehicle address) as that was where I stayed more often at the start of the policy.
Throughout the year I looked at new quotes for renewal with different companies. I used my Mum's address as I was starting to stay there more often.
February 2010 - Quinn Direct sent a renewal notice to my Mum's address (which is a lot more expensive due to higher risk area). I call them and tell them they have the address wrong and it should be my Dad's address (I don't think I made it clear that I had never actually asked them to change my address in the first place).
They then send me a new renewal at my Dad's address which is cheaper.
They also send me a bill for my current insurance for about £45.00. I e-mail and explain that I never actually changed address so the mistake is Quinn's and I shouldn't be getting charged, I also explain I don't want to renew the insurance. I recieve a reply saying that it has been noted I don't want a renewal, however it doesn't mention the charge and I forgot about it.
Payment is due on 26th February so I call again on the 25th and explain the situation. The girl is clueless and insists the amount is due. After a lengthy argument and me spelling it out, the girl says she will talk to her team-leader and they will sort it out. Never hear back.
I declare car off the road on 28th Feb and sell it on 6th March 2010. Don't think anymore about it.
Today, I have recieved a couple of missed calls from Quinn Direct and a voicemail asking me to contact them urgently. Where do I stand if they demand payment? I don't need the insurance anymore seeing as the car is sold but I don't want a default on my credit report for a silly amount such as this.
Hope someone can help

well i think you probably need to phone them just to find out what they want however you NEED to get all the details confirmed in writing as on the phone (unless you have the ability and do record it) you have no proof that anything has been agree etc although you could also write the details of the phone call down whilst having it such as name of person you spoke to (full name not just first name) time of call all those sort of things
defaults can be removed if it is an error of the company and not yourself so do not be bullied into making a payment on something 'just to avoid' a default as it would probably be easier to get a default removed than it would be to get a refund for any money paid out by you in error!Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
If you didn't tell them you had moved where did they 'magic' the other address from?0

They didn't magic it from anywhere. I was looking at comparison websites etc. using that address to see the difference in price so I presume they got the address from there. I definately 100% did not tell them I had moved address.0

if the address was changed on the policy then a new certificate of motor insurance would have to be sent out. no new certificate no change on the policy, so check at your mums to make sure you have not recieved new documents.
Then when you ring back you can point this out to them.More [STRIKE]knowledge[/STRIKE] stuff then sense :rolleyes:

Thanks, there was definately no new certificate ever sent to my Mums (except for the renewal notice).
However, when I informed them of their mistake with the renewal, they sent me out a new certificate for the current year to my current address (my Dad's). The new certificate was exactly the same as the old one except that the new one started from the date I told them about their mistake.0 -
They won't change the address without your permission and the use of comparison websites won't have updated your details, sure you might get quotes, but your existing policy won't have changed.
If they say a charge is due, just state again you never changed the address, you have the original insurance document and have not received another one until recently but also with the same address on it.
Ask for an address and send the information in writing.Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
