Any idea about European Union debt?

Hi all,
Just as I had been budgeting like crazy, making plans on how to pay off my credit cards and make my way to being debt free, there was a heavy thump in my post box. I had taken out bank loans in Finland between 1992 and 1999 and between moving countries several times and making little money, I never paid these off, nor did I receive any communication from them about it although I had given my address in the UK.
But now in my post box was a letter asking me for payment x3 the original money (about £40K) and saying if I don't pay, they will put it to collection via bailiffs.
So the question is, what is the legistlation on debt from another EU country?
I have no assets, no house, no car, no nothing to be repossessed. The current salary I make goes on very meager living and trying to pay off my existing UK credit so I can have a normal life again :-(
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Tricky one. You can be taken to court in Finland or England [assuming you are in England] and the case can be heard under Finnish or English law. Given the time this has been outstanding, it is Statute barred under English law, so cannot result in a judgment under UK law, but if there is no statute barring or you don't meet the criteria in Finland, it could result in a judgement against you either here or in Finland. I doubt an English judgement under Finnish law could be enforced here, but a Finnish judgement could possibly be enforced here. I am nt a lawyer or an expert, so you need to get your own relible advice.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature.
