How Far Can I go? [reclaiming council tax]!

I have lasting power of attorney for my aunt who lives alone in her own flat and suffers from dementia. She has been receiving attendance allowance since January 2009. According to The Alzheimer's Society website she should have been exempt from Council Tax since January 2009.

Will I have any problems reclaiming council tax she paid since January 2009? I don't suppose so, but did want to see if someone knows?

Now for the more curious question... My father died 5 years ago, having been registered disabled since the 1980s and indeed receiving disability living allowance since at least the introduction of council tax. The same Alzheimer's Society website said that because he lived with my mother and was disabled that they should have had the 25% discount. I was the executor and have all the old bills and can see they did not get this. Can I claim council tax refunds right back to the start of council tax up to his death in 2005?

I hope the above link works, it takes you to the relative Direct.gov site and from there a link to claim for your aunt on line. I have no personal experience in this sphere of CT but from previous posts/threads, backdating can sometimes be a problem.

I would doubt if you could now claim for your late father, but it is always worth a try.
