Hi i'm on my mums account :) (Daughter of Jaz)
I've just bought a brilliant High definition camcorder.
The first thing to consider is what you want to use it for, i want to go into Film Production in the future so i've tried to get the best quality I can get - which means high definition is vital for me. But if you are just looking for a video camera for family use, holidays ect...then just go for standard definition, as it's not too much difference :-)
My model is the 'HITACHI DZHVI074' High Definition with 50X Optical zoom, it was a BRILLIANT bargain as usually a good high def camera would be about £300 + but i got mine half price from Comet for £150.

I'd really suggest the Hitchai model I have as it's lightweight and very easy to use. It's Brilliant for home use or for small film projects.
PLUS it works with SD cards, and they are definitely the safest bet to go for. I was tempted to go with hard drive, but if you drop a hard drive camcorder than it will pretty much break the entire thing, including its internal memory, which renders it useless. (But try not to drop a camcorder anyway or you will do it a lot of damage haha! :-) )
You'll need to buy a memory card with it as it's not included, and you may want to buy a backup battery. TIP: buy your sound card from ASDA, they will be SO much cheaper than at comet/PC world. and they are just the same make. and for the battery you will have to buy an extra one from the HITACHI website itself as comet do not stock it....

ANYWAY i'm going on a bit!
But I would definetely suggest the HITACHI that I have as it's at such a good deal! if you need any more information on it then feel free to reply and i'll be glad to help :)
