Statute barred debt on credit file, how do i get rid?

I have an old debt from 2001 on my equifax credit file. I know it is statute barred but I have just discovered Natwest have been updating it every month as a late payment since 2006. They have been unable to provide evidence that the debt is not statute barred and have started ignoring my letters to them damanidng that they remove it. Can anybody advise me what I can do from here?

    Hi Jee

Does the debt have a default date? and if so what date is that?

I have always been led to beleive that you cant get them removed as you still owe the money they are just not able to enforce the debt and make you pay. I could be wrong :-)

The debt remains but it is unenforceable. However, the entry in the credit record should come off effectively once the debt becomes unenforceable.

The Information Commissioner's Office will deal with unfair entries in the record if the people making the entries are playing deaf.

Thanks for the replies. There was never a default added, that is the strange thing. In nine years there was no default, just late payment markers since 2006. They have been unable to prove I owe the money or that if I did, that it is not statute barred. They have stopped replying to my correspondence but keep updating my Equifax record, runing what is an otherwise perfect credit rating. My priority is to get this data removed. Is the ICO a worthwhile approach?
