Eco-Car Insurance

My car insurance was up for renewal this weekend, and I noticed an advert in the Guardian magazine for Co-ops new eco-car insurance https://www.ecoinsurance.co.uk , which they promote by saying they'll offset some of your carbon emissions when you take out their insurance. (Think it was 20 percent).:undecided

Well - at the end of the day, this is a money saving forum, so I did my shopping around, found a cheaper quote elsewhere, with £100 cashback from quidco.

But then....being a good eco-citizen, I thought I'd take a look at the cost of offsetting - (like co-op were offering), and think about doing it anyway.

Found this website http://www.carbonneutral.com/shop/results.asp?cat1=Driving which has a carbon use calculator - plugged in my mileage and boom - I could offset 100% of my car use emissions for £20. Money saved, and carbon offset. :T

Now...who's turn is it to tell me I've wasted £20?????

  • this month's new internationalist magazine (free trials available but won't start til next month) says that carbon offsets are a bit of a problem - some schemes have allegedly resulted in indigenous people driven off their land, the science is not totally proven, and people might think they can pollute as much as before so long as they buy carbon offset credits.

Having said that, i don't drive myself so i don't have this dilemma - and co-op are generally worth supporting. There is also the environmental transport association (ETA) which do car insurance and might be worth checking out next year.

Here's a link to an organisation who do carbon offsetting in a slightly different way to other companies. They explain how it owrks and the reasoning on the site.
