Bank account offering debit cards whilst on DMP?

Hi everyone,

My husband and I have just started the process of a DMP with CCCS. He is trying to change bank accounts as there is a large overdraft on the DMP. Is it possible to get a debit card account or are we really only going to be able to get a cash only account? We are struggling to figure out what we'll do without any card at all, so much is online these days!

So far the creditors have been positive and the endless phone calls have stopped so I am hoping this will be a new start

  • Hi Kirsty,

I started a DMP through Payplan recently and also had to change bank accounts. I thought I'd have difficulty getting an account at all, much less a debit card, but I was pleasantly surprised when Lloyds TSB accepted my online application (none of my debts are connected to them) and, without asking for one, a debit card arrived in the mail shortly afterwards. I don't have, nor do I want, a chequebook.

All my direct debits, standing orders etc. were transferred to Lloyds and it's nice to be back in control again.

Not that we're rolling in £££ of course! Far from it, but it's a fresh start.

I hope you have success finding an account too!
Happy to have a wallet devoid of plastic!
Happy to face up to my debts once and for all!
Looking forward to being debt free FOREVER!
    (However long it takes ;))!
  • hi i was in the same position and i applied for a account with barclays and they have given me a visa debit card. i checked with CCCS and they say i am ok to keep this as long as i do not use the cheque book!

Well no dmp but in the region of 40 late payments in the last 3 years which is imo worse than a DMP but I opened a HSBC last year and to my suprise I was accepted for an account with debit card and cheque book from the very start rather than a basic account which I was expecting.
Co-op apparently give undischarged bankrupts a basic account with a debit card so that might be a good one to go for if you want almost guaranteed acceptance and above Barclays. Pretty sure basic accounts dont do a credit search aswell.

Really dont see why other basic accounts dont give debit cards, surely the technology is there to decline it if it goes over the limit, well it is when you dont want it to anyway.

It's fine to have an account with a debit card whilst on a dmp - you are just not allowed overdrafts etc but a debit card is fine.

As above poster has said - try Barclays basic account which you will need to open in branch. Make sure you ask for a basic account otherwise they will put you through for a normal account and most likely be rejected. The Barclays account comes with a Visa debit card.

Alternatively, if you don't owe money to Natwest or RBS then try a Step account with comes with a Solo card.

If you do go with Barclays, make sure they don't add a reserve facility to your account - it's a temporary unauthorised overdraft for which they charge £22 for each 5 days (eek!) not sure if it's on the basic accounts, but best to make sure. They snuck it onto our accounts, and then we coudln't get out of it for ages, so were paying £200/month in fees
