Help please?!

:(I am looking for advice! I had a period of very bad financial bad planning a while back( 2003-2005) I have a good job that pays a good salary but have been reading a few posts on here and am a bit confused. I payed off huge chunks of debt(£24000) with the help of parents but was left with 2 pieces of debt, namely mbna and debenhams card! Owed roughly £9k between them- defaulted and debt was bought(?) by Aktiv capital(Deb) and Equidebt (MBNA) I set up payment plans to pay these off but have noticed recently the amounts have jumped up? Can they do this? Also I have one more payment to make to Cap one(DEBITAS) how do I go about finding out my balance from them to make sure that the balance is as I think zero? Thanks in advance, Newbie Chris.
