Any thoughts please on this job scenario?

Is part-time - 25 hours/week with half hour unpaid lunchbreak. Mutual flexibility is agreed.
Is in a factory unit (on a "business park") with the office upstairs - stairs are open tread no handrail. (Other safety issues, i.e. locked/jammed fire door; lone working blah blah.)
Expectation is business-smart attire altough role will involve package and despatch of seriously big storage and feed products (equestrian use).
Asked to start the job the following day (all becomes clear) but work on a job trial...

On Day 1 - no induction, expected to clear thorugh messy double desk of paperwork with no explanation of what was what, stuffy non-ventilated office (but freezing the minute convector heater turned off), tasked with creating a database (in Excel...) to mailmerge contacts from last week's exhibition.

If any questions asked - answer is "You're meant to know all this..." "You should be in the zone" or even better "You did a good selling job of yourself..."; some glaring and muttering when standing to remove oneself to go to the bathroom.

Much whingeing about the mailmerge being done for the next day - and sent out (by snail mail) even though no labels for printer and no window envelopes.

Only one computer on which database is being created; Boss is off to meeting to pulls out the flash drive - which contained all the so far unsaved data. All gone. (This happened after planned "finish" time and I didn't know that the database was on the flashdrive as he had it already open when I took over.)

Part-time job became full time and overtime on Day 1; left alone waiting for some workmen to come and unable to leave until Boss returns. Never mind - got the whole database to re-create.

There was no Day 2.

Shame, day 1 was a good yarn. Was it your choice not to go back?

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?:)

I made the choice not to go back - as far as I could see, the writing was on the wall anyway. I think he wanted someone to pull together the database/mailshot tout suite, also to organise his entire office/processes (but resented being asked how any of the systems worked). Once that was done, he would probably "get rid"/end the "work trial".

I shouldn't have even accepted (which I did with some doubts anyway).
  • Unbelievable. What are you going to do about your wages for the day?

Hmmm - well, it was a "work trial". Guess wages just won't apply.

As ^ upthread, lucky escape - must be worth a few quid.

    *sigh*

Can I just direct you to my (warm/fluffy) thread in the Money Saver's Arms; I want that "job" - not to be stuck in crummy office. :(
  • Well you are going to have to stop being so fussy then - what are you like, expecting heat, basic safety and normal bosses!!

Good luck with finding a decent job next time xx

    :D

    Phew.

I was wondering if I had committed some dastardly deed in a previous life for which I was being punished.
