Can anyone recommend an instructor in the Stockport area (preferably cheapish!) We are planning on buying our daughter some lessons but weren't anticipating on paying £20+ an hour.
cheers

  • Hi!
It was a while ago when I learnt to drive, but I went with BSM and they messed me around an awful lot - so I would suggest you avoid them.

    Hi
I don't know any, but I am learning at the mo and when I was finding an instructor most of them seemed to charge £20/hr. My instructor charged me £15/hr for the first 5 then £20/hr after that. Some give discount for block bookings as well. Best to look in the Yellow Pages and ring round. Also, look in your local paper as some advertise in there when they have 'vacancies'. :)

the only problem with this company is they can swop & change instructors around, which didn't suit my nephew.

there is thread which gives details about a way to get cheaper lessons with BSM.

My instructor from manchester charged £15 an hour, but he was the cheapest by far. £18-20 is standard.. my sister in south wales pays £21 and that's the cheapest in her area.. so expect to pay about £20.

Also don't go with BSM. They suck.

As someone else said in the BSM thread - trainee instructors must display a pink triangular badge to show they have had the required training but not yet passed the final exam (and if they don't pass this after 3 attempts at it, they cannot teach any more and must start the training again after a wait of 2 years)
A fully qualified instructor will display their green rectangular licence.

£18-20 is the norm around Manchester. Yes, one or two charge less but I asked myself why so much cheaper when they all seem to offer the same training. Stories from friends told me that they felt their sons & daughters were having to take more lessons than their friends who were paying a bit more. Maybe to make up the costs ? We get what you pay for in every sphere of life don't we.

The instructor I chose told me that most of them find new pupils through recomendations from satisfied pupils.

And it isn't as easy as when I took my test- many more lessons are needed nowadays.

Apparently Phil has now left this Driving School, However I have since been recommended a different local Driving School that seems OK, £17 ph or £160 for 10 1 hour lessons,
    Thanks for all the help,
    cheers
