Why not tag their pay to the agreed measure of inflation?
CPI each year would keep everyone happy.0 -
If we did not allow mp's to do other jobs as well then the commons would be even more full of career politicians than it is now.
As i have said before the way forward is larger salary, less expenses and a minimum fixed number of hours.
To suggest mp's currently do long hours is laughable, when you see the commons on tv it is three quarters empty most of the time.
When they have debates where they have been called in by the whips they can't get out fast enough at the end,a bit like school kids who can't get out of class quick enough0 -

They do work in other places than on the benches at the commons you know. And is someone sitting on a bench in the commons daydreaming actually "working" anyway?
I'm not going to comment on whether or not they do work hard (though I believe some do), I'm just saying TV pictures of the benches in the house of commons are not proof one way or the other. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -

I never said that that they couldn't claim for travel between two places of work (eg. between constituency office & Parliament), which is allowable as a deductable expense. However, MPs are also allowed to claim for travel to/from their home to their places of work, which is not allowed as a travelling expense under HMRC rules.
For example, if they live outside their constituency they are able to claim for travel from their home to their consituency office, or Parliament and vice versa. Likewise, if they live in their constituency, they can claim for travel from home to their local office or Parliament and vice versa. This is not permitted for Joe Public under HMRC rules.
My office is in the same town as I live, around 10 miles from my home. I am not permitted to claim deductable travelling expenses for the 20 miles per day. MPs are, however, for a similar trip.
You've posted a lot about them getting 57p per mile up to xxxx miles, and whatever it was for anything over xxxx (can't be bothered re-reading your post for the figure - it's not important anyway). You've gone on to point out how those figures are more than joe public can get without being taxed (as per HMRC rates).
Others have pointed out that lots of employers pay above HMRC rates.
But what's the best things about your post?
That it's wrong.
MPs get 40p per mile for up to 10,000 and 25p above that.
The same as joe public. Ahem.
(more than many civil servants though - go figure that one).
If you can get such as basic, easily checked fact completely wrong, what does that say about all your speculative stuff?0
