these are steel framed bikes , the better modern ones are Alloy, makes a big difference to the weight, important when you are struggling up a hill :)

Hey, I brought 1.. well 2 for 1 last year!! For £50- each I thought it was worth it even if I never used it! Well I've just started using it now work is only 3 miles away. Mine squeaks abit (allthe springs on it everywhere!!) but i'm no lightflower, but it's pretty good.. but basic.. the gears aren't that good but there's enough changes to get up a big slope (I think not getting up hills are due to my fitness not the bike!!). I do think mine is alittle on the heavy side and I did change the seat to a gel one, apart from that I can't grumble and think it's more then worth £50!! I was actually thinking I've only used it 6 times so far.. that's £8.30 a ride.. so I need to get my moneys worth before the summer ends!! I hope that's of some use?

  • TosRUs have a basic man's and woman's bike for £59. My OH had a sit on one last week - said it was Ok , but then went home and fixed his old one! I rewarded him with a gel seat cover from Aldi!

TBH there are so many basic steel frame bikes in the world already I don't see why the world needs more of them. You can pick them up secondhand for next to nothing. I bought one at a car boot sale for £1 a couple of weeks ago. I really don't see the point of buying a new bike unless it is actually better in some way than what you could get cheaper if you bought it secondhand. Bikes are pretty simple machines, there is not much to go wrong and they are not so hard to fix when they do. So manufacturers keep making new models ever year and yet they last for decades. It's a wonder we are not up to our eyballs in them really. Where do they all go? Are we shipping them out to China or India?

I purchased some bikes last summer from Sterling House on the Buy one get one Free £99 deal. To be honest they are good for the money, I didn't have any problems with them at all.

I think they are a bit heavy but so are most of the ones in Halfords. They come flatish packed and the breaks and gears need adjusting which I find difficult. in the end I took mine into the Raleigh and got it serviced. If you don't use it much and it's less than £50 then its worth it. Second hand is a good option. Get a nice light one.

I've used them a few times with no problems at all.

If only the bikes would stop getting stolen, I could stop buying them

  • "You get what you pay for" and for £50 or a similar amount you will get a lot for your money however I`d strongly suggest getting a bike of a higher quality. If you don`t want to spend alot then go the secondhand route i.e old bikes that have been serviced go quite cheapily in the loot, if you don`t like cycling you`ll be able to sell it for a similar amount. It may be a good idea to buy a bike from a bike shop but buy last years model which can be alot cheaper, by doing this you`ll probably be able to choose a bike that fits/suits you well, againg if you don`t like cycling you`ll be able to sell it for not alot less than you paid.

By getting a good quality bike there is better chance that you`ll enjoy cycling and want to keep at it. It is enjoyable and helps with fitness, it can get you out in the countryside, parks etc, it can provide cheap transport, it can be quicker than the car in rush hour, np parking, no waiting for buses etc. OK just buy one.

You may also have to spend money on pumps, helmets, locks, lights, possibly waterproofs etc
