I was wondering whether dogs pester chickens at all and also whether chickens are bothered by dogs? We have a dog that is excellent with animals so far, and I'm considering looking into getting chickens at some point so I would be interested to hear views/experiences on this.
    Thanks

    Kaz,

My neighbour has 2 hen runs, each with a different breed of bird and has 3 dogs (2 white alsations(sp?) and a spaniel). Whilst the dogs have their own run and the hens theirs, the dogs are let out at the end of the day and I've not once seen then harrass the birds.

The goats at the end of the garden though is a completely different story, for some reason those dogs just cant help teasing them .

I know you said you asked around ... but do you know if there is a listing anywhere so that others, like myself, might found out where our nearest free range egg producers are?

    TIA
Queenie, do any of your local shops sell local free range eggs? We have a couple of greengrocers nearby that stock them and the farm's details are inside the box.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.

Whilst on the subject of hens I just wanted to say thanks to Queenie for posting the link to the Battery Hen rescue people on another recent thread.

We have a mad Dobie at the moment & I wouldn't dare have hens but after he pops his clogs - hopefully in many years time - we're definitely going to have some rescued hens. Having looked at the website & seen the sorry state the poor things are in I'd like to have 4 & give them at least a few months or hopefully years of good life.

I like 'Starting with Chickens' by Katie Thear as a good book. The Omlet book above, I had a look at in Borders and found it a bit patronising.

However, the vast majority of what I learnt came from here:

Just a note ..... I'm a bee keeper, and bees and chickens don't mix!!! Keep them well apart (incase no one has told you!)
