There are various chemical packs available. One type is like a round brick tablet that you place in a plastic float and that does it all for you. Another is a starter pack with PH +/- powder and comes with a pot of chlorine and a tester kit. The tester has two types of sm tablets with it, you get a sample of the pool water and drop a tablet in and according to what colour it changes to you then work out according to your pool size how much to put in. There are also strips which can test the water like the ones GP's use to do quick urine tests.
I got my kit off ebay but you can get them from Argos but by order only. Also try your yellow pages as you may have a local pool provider who will supply you. You do need to test the water, too much or too little chlorine could be harmful. You also need algeside which comes with the kit. If the water turns green all is not lost you can get something called shock treatment -costs about £19.
Make sure you have a weather cover. Another thing they try to sell you is a solar cover heater I would not bother personally (It's just like blue bubble wrap). I went to my local Big Yellow Storage shop and bought a long length of large bubbled bubble wrap which I lay in strips over the pool - it definately keeps the heat in the water. A special pool net for getting bits out and a soft broom to sweep the pool floor are useful and help the filter to do it's job. I couldn't afford it this year but I will be buying a pool hoover kit next year.
    Hope this helps.

Makro also doing a sunspot pool kit containing:

algaecide, chlorine granules , pH minus, pH plus, and tester strips for £34.99 plus vat. bought one last year and only just run out, so bought another today!

Many places online who deal with pool chemicals too, although these are not cheap for what they are!

This is my 2nd year with a fastset 10' pool & I LOVE IT!! Especially in this weather. I only fill it once at the beginning, and then top it up about once a week. Although I've got the PH increaser/decreaser, I test the water once a week & have never had to use these. All I do, if I've used the pool is fill a small plastic jug with water, add a very small amount of chlorine granules, stir it around until disolved & then chuck it in the pool. Don't forget to run the filter afterwards for around an hour. I also invested in a heater (ebay) last year, cost £60 but it was worth it. At the moment, all I use is a solar cover (ebay) & it does heat the water during the day & it tends to keep warm well into the evening. Also, I found that it was much easier to cover the pool with as it just floats on the surface, rather than having to bother with a heavy cover & rope. I am on a water meter but didn't notice the difference in my bill last summer.

I purchased the chlorine from a local spa shop, I think it cost around £8, and it should last me the whole summer

It takes around 4 hours to fill

    Hope this helps someone!

Ive got a 15ft pool and we absolutley love it, kids have used it every day for past couple of weeks.

This year Ive had no problems at all. I used the chlorine tablets which I get from a local garden nursery - apparantly the ph level is actually more important that the chlorine level and i test it everycouple of days. Ive had no problem with the ph this year but in previous years I have used the kit that gardnt 1 mentioned. Also Makro is by far the cheapest place for the replacement filters - you will go through a few altho we do clean and reuse also. When I see them in Makro I always stock up.

Oh by the way I did read on this site somewhere (though for the life of me cant remember where) but it only costs between £3 & £4 to fill a 15 ft pool when you are on a meter.

Also around here the firemen will fill it up for a small charge and only takes minutes.

    Hi

I have got a 12ft one, initially the best bet is to purchase a starter chemical set. It should contain...PH Plus, PH Minus, Chlorine, Algeacide, and some test strips. It will also come with a leaflet telling you how best to maintain the correct levels of chemicals.

I have found out through doing this that my tap water has a low PH level therefore in future I will only need to buy PH Plus. The algeacide I put in every 2 weeks and then i just add the correct amount of chlorine each evening whilst running the pump for a few hours to distribute it.

i was really scared of all this beforehand but it is so, so easy.

    Hello crunchynut

I've merged your thread with an older 'Pool Chemicals' thread. If you read back from post #1 you'll find some useful information.
