I have just recently had a garage built ,and want to know if I have to contact the rates office to inform them of this or do I wait until they contact me.

Well either, or to be honest - you'd need to contact the valuation office in the first instance to get it valued0

The council's business rates department will normally be informed of any new or altered properties by their planning or building control departments, who will then request the Valuation Office (re)assess it. But there's nothing to stop you approaching them directly. Some councils are more 'on the ball' about it than others.0

It should get picked up from building control notifications. Just to make sure (and possibly speed things up if you're in a hurry to get it valued) you can contact land and property services - valuation department
