Paying debt on Job Seekers Allowance

Hi all,

I have a question re: the above subject.

If someone is on JSA (£100 fortnightly) and have a debt of £600-800 with one company (Provident), what is a reasonable amount to offer in payment until further employment is found?

Luckily this is not for me, but I've been asked to find out since I've started posting here.

Any help much appreciated.

I think a token gesture should be offered in writing, of what you can afford. You may be asked to provide a SOA.
Im not an expert but thats what comes to mind.

I was paying £1 token payments,
If your friend is doing itI'd urge them to get in contact with one of these
    Non-profit Debt Counsellors' List

Or use the templete letters on National Debtline

  • it's for friends daughter, her outgoings are phone (PAYG) wants phone to make sure contactable, rent (only taking 10% at the moment), basic travel for trips to Job Centre x times a week and paying towards food. I think they want around 30% of her current income at the moment to pay, i think that's a lot.

I'll get her to write an offer of token payments towards payment of the loan whilst seeking employment.

    30% is unreasonable on JSA,
use the link to the templete letters I posted
and use the debt remedy on http://www.cccs.co.uk/
it will help with the finding out the numbers to put into a SOA

Do not bother writing to the local office - deal with their head office in Bradford. That is where I write to for my clients and someone on JSA - offer £1 per month and they will accept it.
I am a debt counsellor working in the voluntary sector - we don't charge our clients for the work we do!
  • Will let her know. cheers for this. My friend would pay it off but she's on benefits too so no spare cash.

Send the letter off as explained in the posts above. They cannot have what your friends daughter hasn't got. Send the letter by recorded delivery too, so they can't say they didn't receive it.
