No credit history?!

Hi, I am 27 years old and earn £26000 p.a, I have never applied for, or had any credit. But my car has died and I am looking at buying a new one. I want to borrow approx £12000, but as I have no credit history I am wondering if I am seen as a risk?
My friend suggested I apply for a credit card just so I have some credit, but I am unsure if this is a good idea. I am also in a rush as I am without a car and I need one to get to work. I don't really want to apply to the car dealers as their rates aren't very competitive.
Any advice would be great

try your bank as they know how well you manage your money.
buy a cheaper car.. one that you can afford.0 -
Without a credit history they won't be able to look back and see how you'd managed your money, this would be a greater financial risk to them as there's nothing on paper to show them what your finances have been like.Total 'Failed Business' Debt £29,043

as above - only your bank will have history on you thus making it an easier decision for them.0
