Slightly off thread, I know but some people that have replied to this thread have said that they are putting together a gardening hamper for mother's day. My Mam's health is worsening but she loves pottering in the gardesn and I was wondering what I can put in a hamper like this. I have got some gloves, a trowel and fork and a kneeler as well as ordering these bulbs. What else?

A lot depends on size of garden etc, but as a tip. not too many bulbs to be planted kneeling down! They can take ages.

In the 'latest offers' the drwarf cannas at £3.45 look lovely, one in a pot, and lilies at £1.45 (eyeliner & stargazer) look spectacular. Finally the large gladioli for £1.75 are again very beautiful. All will flower this year :)

will the bulbs arrive in time tho Payless? Why don't you nip into Poundland and get a few small shrubs or a seed tray and some seeds to start off indoors

This might be a strange one but what about a nice straw hat! I tend to burn my scalp quite a lot when I'm pottering around in the garden.

Oh and some nice hand moisturiser always goes down a treat with me :D

A straw hat is a really good idea as is the seeds and planter. I don't have and never have had a garden so I know nothing about it. Last year I got her some herb seeds, soil and plant pots and she loved them.

Physically Mum is ok but she has alzheimers. If I'm not careful about what I get her she loses it. She lives alone now in a big house. But chocolates and things she enjoy she tends to start straight away, weather permitting.

I don't think that the bulbs will arrive in time but will get her seeds etc to keep her busy. The bulbs will be a surprise later

Her garden is quite small so I plan on giving a lot of the bulbs to my auntie who has beena great help with Mam since my dad died

Another little thought, with you mentioning altzheimers. You could perhaps ask her about things she remembers from childhood gardens, particularly nice smelling plants. Planting some that she remembers might trigger happy memories sat outside in the summer.
