Scotrail Club 55 Question

  • just to add to my last post on Club 55

the next promo will run from 1st July until 31st August and will be £22 for Club 55 Standard and £27 for Club 55 Premier, although Premier is very much subject to availability (ie quite hard to get)

there will be some further time restrictions as well due to the offer running during peak time.

tickets are not on sale yet but will be soon.
  • Tickets will be on sale again to over period 20/10 to 30/11/10. Prices are £18 second class or £23 first class returns.

To give you an idea of the saving this represents, my Mum & Dad are going to Inverness for a 4 night break in October. Scotrail online Advance purchase tickets were £113 total. By purchasing a Senior Railcard at £26 each the price came down to £74.60 total. However the combined total cost of doing this would have been £130.60 (£17.60 dearer than them paying the full price). Yes, they would still have the card for the rest of the year but in their case they wouldn't use it.

Instead they will take advantage of the Club 55 deal, and for an additional £4 each will be able to travel from Largs to Inverness first class for only £27 each.

Incidentally they could also have travelled by bus from Glasgow to Inverness using their Senior Citzs bus passes. There is a new Scottish Citylink Gold service which has an on board host to dispense FREE tea/ coffee and a FREE sandwich, leather seating and WiFi, and that would have cost them only £1.50 return each from Largs to Inverness including their free food.

My mum's not to good a traveller on long bus journeys so this time the train won, but the Citylink deal is fantastic even for full price tickets (£23.50 APEX return (book 2 days in advance) from Glasgow to Inverness with free grub) AND it's non-stop so only takes 3hr 23 mins.

But get this, anyone can also buy a Super Single on this route (Mon-Thu only) from £4 each way (yes, and it does include the free grub!). Think I might be leaving the car at home if I fancy a wee break up in Inverness in future. I can't post the link but it's at citylinkgold dot co dot uk

latest Club 55 starts for travel on 20 Sept not Oct, and runs til 30 Nov.

there won't be first class on the Largs - Glasgow Central part of the journey, and it may be hard to get first on the GLQ-INV part as this is very limited. We get complaints about not people being able to get first fairly regularly.

We were able to book first between Edinburgh and Aviemore in November, but we had to dash in quickly as soon as new Club 55 tickets were on sale and we had to be flexible about times (first is only available on certain times).
