About 6 years ago she sold a field that had permission for log cabins. There are now 4 occupied cabins on the site and I wonder if the electricity supply is tapped into my mum's house. Is this a possibility?

    What do you think?

    Many thanks
    Kate

Certainly something to consider, after reading your 1st post above l was already thinking if perhaps a neighbour had tapped into the supply, you hear so much about cannibas factory in house these days defrauding the electric

You said your mum is on Economy 7 - we used to have electric storage heating, and I remember looking at the Economy 7 tariff and being shocked at how high the price of day time units are. It is really designed for storage heaters that come on and heat up at night but am I right in thinking that your mum is using it for the heat lamps in the cat shelter that are basically radiant electric heaters which might come on during the day/evening? I wonder if she would find that a different tariff would be more enonomical?

Hi OP - my advice would be to do as RAS has stated in post #10. Hopefully armed with that information you will begin to understand the source of the problem / usage.

    Hi Kate

Is usage being recorded on both registers when the meter is switching between rate 1 and rate 2?

Don't understand why we will not read the meter. We have a responsibility to see the meter on a regular basis. Not just for readings but also to make sure it is safe and working ok. Have we given your mum a reason for this?

In the cat shelter, 8061 kWh over 89 days averages approx 90 kWh/day. As RAS says, one heat lamp could be using up to 10 kWh/day. If all 25 pens have their own heat lamp and only half of the pens are in use, then this alone could easily account for usage in the shelter. This is without the other appliances.

I would follow RAS's excellent advice and see if this is where the bulk of the usage is going. If it is, then the remainder of the usage at the main house is reasonable for an all electric property given the appliances listed.

How long has the usage been at this level? Has your mum had the heat lamps on a lot more recently given the really cold winter we have had?

I do understand your mum is stressed by this and is probably not comfortable with taking regular meter readings. Any chance you can do this for her?

What I would suggest is taking daily readings from both the main meter and the sub meter over a 7 day period.

With this info and a list of all the appliances in use, give our specialist consumption team a call and discuss your findings with them. They will be able to provide much more specific advice.

If there are still discrepancies after this, then, we can start to look at other possibilities like a meter fault or someone tapping into her supply. For the time being, though, I would concentrate on her usage.

Shout up if you need any more help, Kate and please let me know how you go on.
