If you take on a second job, will your first (main) employer know through Tax etc? QUOTE]

No, I did this for 8 years & no problems with main employer despite the fact that they they stated after a few years that a second job could only be undertaken with their permission.

Niaud - I would only say check your Contract of Employment because my main job one actually says any other employment they should be notified of. I told my immediate boss and he was fine about it. Only concern wuold be if it affected my work. Good luck Billie xx

Can i just ask another question about second jobs please?
OH is thinking of taking on a p/t second job. He currently works 30hrs and gets £161 a week after tax and NI. The second job is self employed and he'll get between £40 and £100 a week for it. Will taking on this second job be worth while? I've been trying to work out the sums myself and if i'm correct he'll only be £500 a year better off (based on lower weekly amnt) but not sure if my calculations are. Also how will this affect working tax and child tax credits?
    Thanks

Nickynoo - I am not expert enough to say if you have done your sums right, but my 2nd job has been more than worthwhile. If I only work my contracted hours of 20 per month I clear £100 and that is not to be scoffed at. i have worked as many other hours that I can and have been pleasantly surprised. Good luck we all need it, Billie xx:)

It will probably depend how much is your expenses working for your second job. If you're only spending more than what you are getting, it's not worth it. But if you are earning more than what you're spending doing that job, it's probably worth it. Though we cannot avoid taxes, it's already part of it.

Anyway, I believe the most worthwhile second job you could take are those home based jobs since you don't have to pay the taxes (I think.)

  • Home based jobs are taxed in the UK too Mr Mulla, if you earn more than your personal allowance and report all your income to HMRC as you should.
