List the positives of being a DFW (apart from the obvious!)

Hi everyone,

To mark the official start of my DMP with CCCS yesterday, I made a list of all the positives coming out of this (I like to be positive and happy :D). Apart from the obvious paying off debt/not worrying about it getting worse etc, I came up with a few others and would love to hear yours please!

- I have re-discovered my love of cooking from scratch and have devised my own cheap home-made ready meals to put in the freezer which are yum and time saving.

- As I can't go out shopping I have more time on my hands, I am using this time to do projects around the house that I've been meaning to do for ages! Things like sort out photo albums, organise music collection etc.

- We are going out for more walks with my daughter as they are free so getting more exercise.

- We are de-cluttering the house so that we can put stuff on Ebay and it's becoming much tidier as a result, which makes me happy and it's easier to clean.

- Any extra comission that DH earns is precious, and goes into a savings account which we can see grow each month (not by much...but still!) it means we don't worry so much about unexpected expenses, and DH feels like his comission is going towards something worthwhile, rather than frittered on junk. He's performing better at work :D

I am sure there are lots more, I will post as I think of them!

I'd love to hear yours...

Once you are up and running with a debt repayment scheme, you learn to look forward to the post arriving (no nasty credit card bills!). You also plan for Christmas well in advance and enjoy the challenge of getting all the bargains and freebies you can. Then, when Christmas has been and gone, you can smile and be satisfied that for the first time ever you paid up front for Christmas and nothing was bought on credit!

All the tips on here have enabled me to claim back money i'm entitled to like being exempt from council tax - thats HUGE i wouldn't have known if it wasn't for this forum!

The other thing is the thought that if I can save to get myself DF I can't wait to use the techniques to actually save up for holidays etc............................

The most positive thing though is the feeling of pride I get when I pay something off makes me feel really good ;-)

i've made some great friends on here,
i've also built my confidence in that i know i'm not the worst in the world, but i now know that i can give others advice which is worthwhile.
you get to realise that it's the little things that count in life, whether it be their adding up to a large debt payment or just something homemade instead of purchased as a gift.

My attitude changed entirely. I now realise that the amassing of money and 'stuff' is pointless. There are many ways of making life a little easier and relaxing.
I would love to be able to clear the debt tomorrow, but I cant. So having a dmp is how I make my life easier.
I'll leave the mugs shopping in Bicester Village ( a couple of miles away), trying to find 'bargains' in the Gucci Shop, and take myself for a 5 mile walk across the fields with my dogs.
    Good thread.

Hey you live quite near me! I used to go to Bicester Village all the time :( Great for cheap kids shoes in Clarks though, same shoes but half the price :D

Thanks everyone for these...I love reading them all!

I agree with rediscovering the love of cooking - pottering about the kitchen is a simple joy.

I like not feeling 'branded' by products all the time, because I know the standard things are just as good, if not better.

I enjoyed watching my nieces ignore the expensive gifts bought elsewhere in favour of small, cheaper but thoughtful gifts that gave them something to think about.

I loved the feeling of renogotiating my mortgage so I carried on paying the same amount even though the rates had gone down - knowing that I was saving 4 years and about £35k by doing it!

I like knowing that I can control my debt, and that it does not control my life anymore.
Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....
