I get both child benefit's and Child Tax Credits. I have been having problems with one of my bank accounts, Natwest keep freezing it and removing it from online banking So I can't access it for no reason. I have complained to natwest but have got no where so far It all started after I filed a Claim for Mis sold PPI. I was successful and they paid out. But as soon as they had paid out they started to get funny and started freezing my bank account.. Any way a month ago because of this I phoned up the child benefit's and tax credits offices and asked for my bank details to be changed and for both to be paid in to my other account at a different bank. So i would be able to access the money. I have checked my bank account today to find that only my child benefit's have been paid in. and that even though I phoned and gave them new bank details it seems they haven't changed the bank details for tax credits and have paid them in to the natwest account that I can't access. What should I do? Do I have grounds to complain. As I did phone up a month ago and insisted that they changed the bank account and did give them the new bank detail. Is it there fault for paying in to wrong account. Can I insist that they recover the money and pay in to correct account. I really need this money it amounts to nearly £700 that I was expecting which includes a small back pay that I can't afford to loose . I can't see what more I could have done than phoning up asking for bank details to be changed and giving new bank details.

Any advice would be much appreciated

Thanks in advance

  • Is there any one who can give me some advice. I have just phoned the tax credits office and they have comfirmed that the tax credits were paid in to the old account instead of the new account and they bacically told me their is nothing they can do. Because the bank has accepted the payment. They don't seem to care that I can't actually access that account and that I did phone and ask for bank details to be changed and did give new bank details. They told me I need to contact the bank but I have and its a waste of time natwest won't talk to me or answer my questions and will not let me access money. When I phoned up to ask for my bank details to be changed I phoned the child benifits office.. They took details of my new bank details and changed the bank deatils for my child benifits. They then asked me if I wanted to change the bank details for my tax credits as well as they could do it at same time. I said yes so they took the new bank details and confirmed that they had changed the details for the tax credits. But appraently according to the person I spoke to at the tax credits office today they didn't. The details on my new bank account never got passed to the tax credit office. and this is why the tax credits got paid in to old account that is frozen. They told me to try contacting the child benifits office and take it up with them. But when I phone the child benifits office they say they can't help and that I need to phone the tax credits office which I have done. I feel really angry, its there mistake not mine and im being punished for it. It does not seem fair.

    What should I do?

Is there any hope of getting my tax credits or is it lost.

All the problems you have had stems from this.

whats going on with that account?

Is the real reason that you have have bank charges on this account and its in the red?

  • No I have no bank charges on this natwest account and it is not in the red. My claim wasn't any thing to do with bank charges. I filed a complaint because I found out last september that A loan I have with them had loan protection and I never agred or asked for this and was not even told it was optional.

After a leghty investigation they agreed and refunded my money. I don't know what this has got to do with my question. I was asking for avise not a lecture. You should get you facts right and if you havent got any thing usefull to say don't post a response.

This is your problem. Child Benfit and Tax Credits are seperate benefits/organistations with different procedures. Although they are both run by HMRC ringing one does not ensure the other is informed.

It is your responsibility to phone both organisations to inform them of changes. As you didnt do this with Tax Credits they are probably right to say this is your own fault and not recall or repay.
  • CBO can send the new bank details to TCO (and vice versa) but if the change is urgent - or if you just want to be sure a referral is sent to the other department - I would advise calling both individually.

The advisers cannot access the records of the other department so it can take a bit of time waiting for the referrals to be reviewed and processed.

Why not go into your Natwest branch and speak to someone face to face, if your account is in credit you need to be able to access the funds surely!?!

Or just close the account with Natwest fullstop, getting a cheque for the outstanding balance which you can pay into your other account?
