    I'm surprised this is the first year it's showing a shortfall. This time last year the situation was looking much worse. If the last projection you had was around this time in 2008 then yes I can see it. That was before the worst effects of the financial crisis were seen.

    Projections are based on assumed future growth rates - they aren't predictions. IF you get growth at 4% a year, you will get this much, IF it grows at 6% a year you will get this much etc. In 2008 I'd guess that far from growth at any of the example rates, nearly all funds would have made substantial losses.
