grocery money saving and dieting

Options
I'm giving some thought to going on the old slimmingworld and have downloaded thier 7 day plan to try. What does this have to do with moneysaving I hear you ask? Well, OH volunteered to eat out of the freezer so he didnnt need a whole lot of groceries, and didn't need much by way of toiletires etc. But by the time I'd bought everything for the week that was in the plan, I had exceeded my weekly shopping budget by 50%. This is sticking rigidly to their 7day plan and i have no other real info about what you can and can't eat. Once Isign up and get the books and stuff, does it get any cheaper? Any forum members who do slimming world who have any suggestions?

Once you get going you can choose between 'red' days when you eat mostly meat and 'green' days when you eat mostly carbs. The red days can be very expensive - it's all very well 'allowing' yourself to gorge on meat according to the plan, but it isn't cheap.

I only stayed with SW for 3 weeks - for me it wasn't so much about the cost, I just didn't get on with the diet - I wanted a plan that helped me be more disciplined and in control of my diet and for me, SW didn't feel balanced.
But on the other hand I have a veggie friend, who only does green days, and finds it cheap and easy to lose weight - so I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand...
