Late brother-in-laws pension

My late brother-in-law we believe has certain pensions.He worked on the buses for a number of years.He had time off bringing up his 2 boys.Sadly he fell out with both of them and became almost reclusive.We lost touch with him.
The problem is that we have no dates as to when he worked and also the bus company had takeovers so what knowlage we have is scant.Any suggestions how we can find out about pension contributions he has?Thanks
