debts on disability benefit

hi
my situation is that i have over 20k in debts
i am on disability living allowance and other benefits
i will never be able to work again
my debts are all on 5 credit cards
i own my own home and the interest only mortgage is about the same as the rateable value of the house (N Ireland ) but it might sell for a bit more
i had a problem a few years ago and used my benefits to pay the mortgage and lived on credit cards
i stopped paying the credit card payments about a yr ago
im now being threatened with court and debts have been passed to different collection agencies
can anyone help or advise me?
i know the first advise is dont ignore the debts and threats but i have and am close to a breakdown
everyday is a nightmare i cant open my door when the agents call opening the court threat letters push me further to the edge

  • advice4debtNI: This new government funded service offers free, confidential and independent phone and email advice to anyone in Northern Ireland on dealing with debt. Link: advice4debtNI Tel: 0800 917 4607 Opening times: M-F 9am-5pm.

Mostly England and Wales issues here, but i am sure some people know about helping in NI too. Since i don't i can only recommend the above charity.

Your benefits should be protected from been taken, but if you have debts and no means to pay it, they could get a CCJ, or even a charging order on the house. Meaning when sold they get paid from the house sale after any remaining mortgage.

Any disability premiums, DLA, In Cap. Carers etc. that are awarded for assistance for illness and or disability are legally not allowed to be included as part of your income, and need not therefore be mentioned to anyone.

They have told me because of my circumstances I can pay my debts at a token monthly amount and my house will not be at risk.
