World's Healthiest Foods vitamin B12 has good research based information.
No toxicity levels have been reported for vitamin B12, and no toxicity symptoms have been identified in scientific research studies. Even long-term studies, in which subjects have taken 1,000 micrograms of the vitamin on a daily basis for five years, have revealed no toxicity effects.

Braintalk communities There are some B12 experts on this forum Braintalk coummunities.

This looks good as does this Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Yes, if you could afford it it would still be safe to take 40 of those tablets daily.
As you can see from this Patients in the parenteral therapy group received 1,000 mcg of vitamin B12 intramuscularly while those in the oral treatment group received 2,000 mcg daily for 120 days. At the end of 120 days, patients who received oral therapy had significantly higher serum vitamin B12 levels and lower methylmalonic acid levels than those in the parenteral therapy group. doctors use much higher levels to correct deficiency states.

  • I was under the impression that we couldn't offer specific medical advice on this forum?

Not sure how getting b12 really relates to the rules laid out by our esteemed leader.

Anyway, I'd be cautious about super doses of B12 unless prescribed by your GP. As a note of caution raised B12 levels can be found in the following illnesses

    chronic granulocytic leukaemia
    acute myeloblastic leukaemia
    acute promyelocytic leukaemia > 1600 ng/l
    myelosclerosis
    chronic lymphatic leukaemia
    carcinomatosis
    liver disease:
    acute hepatitis
    cirrhosis
    chronic liver disease
    hepatic coma
    polycythaemia rubra vera
    non-leukaemic leucocytosis

Super high B12 doesn't cause the above illness but if a Doctor does a B12 level and finds it very high and isn't aware that you are taking super doses of B12 he/she may get worried you have the above (or the B12 is masking them)

Unlike your post, in which you set yourself up as a fount of knowledge and source of wisdom I provide links to research based reputable sources of information.. From these sources I highlight "information" which may be relevent to the OP. I do not provide advice, medical or otherwise. I simply provide links to sources of good information.

It would be helfpful if you could back up your scaremongering with some statistics showing the scale of Vitamin B12 overuse and compare that with the scale of B12 insufficiency.

  • Thanks for the rapid reply Ted,

Forum rules forbid me from giving advice as a GP, so I cannot get into a debate about the pros and cons of vitamin B excess/defiency

As a layperson I politely suggest you also respect the rules.

Links to websites are not always reliable and can follow any agenda that a person has,
eg If you are anti-immunisation go to https://www.jabs.org.uk
    or
If you want some sensible information go to https://www.immunisation.org.uk

Links to medical papers are not much help either. Without a solid understanding of medical statistics, methodology, and a broad reading a reliance on single paper studies can give misleading evidence about a subject.

Just a friendly bit of advice.

This is potentially misleading because intramuscular hydroxycobalamin (Vitamin B12) is not usually given daily (and the frequency is not stated above). Despite the fact that B12 absorption by the oral route is very poor, it's not surprising that 2mg daily will result in a significantly higher serum B12 level.

To the OP - try a vitamin/health food shop, but follow the instructions on the container (should have a recommended dose/daily allowance). If blood tests continue to show low B12 levels and your doctor is concerned, then they may prescribe B12 by injection.
