disposing / recycling a laptop battery - help!?

I've recently had to replace my laptop battery and had hoped to recycle the old one and get some cash back, like you can with phone batteries etc.
Having ''googled' my socks of, i'm now just happy to find somewhere i can recyle it at all, free, gratis, not illegally or poluting the world.
Can anyone reccomend a starting point?
My local council don't take them, and i can't find any online companies who will without charging me.

Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it.
Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.

I gave mine to a company called reboot (in Cambridge) where they use old computer parts to make new ones. Maybe you have a similar one locally? Failing that a lot of people seem to post various bits of computer on Freecycle and they get taken by someone who knows what you could do with them!
Only other thing I can think of is to ask the guy at your local tip. Mine are really friendly and if they cant take something normally know who can.
Hope that helps.0
