Problems with cancelling Council Gym Membership

I have reviewed my finances recently and made some cut backs - one of which was my membership to the local council leisure centre - which I have not been to since 12 May.

I wrote a very nice letter:

Please note that it is with regret that I am cancelling my membership.

I will honour the May & June invoice but will be cancelling the July invoice with my bank. As you can see from my records, I have struggled to give my training the effort it deserves and with that plus a need to reduce my expenditure, I have regrettably had no choice in this decision.

Please be assured that I am not cancelling to join any other gymnasium and I will continue to exercise via bike riding as my children are now at an age that they can ride. The intention is to make exercise a family activity.

Should my circumstances change I will have no hesitation in rejoining.


However today, I received a letter back saying that due to terms and conditions, my membership will cease at the end of September.

It also mentions not cancelling my DD (which I have already done) and that their Finance department will pursue payment, taking court action if necessary.

It also thanks me for my valued custom!!


Anyway, has anyone else had problems cancelling membership with their local council leisure centre? Did you pay your 3 month penalty or not?
