Came unstuck with online submission

in Cutting tax
I have been doing my husbands return online for a couple of years with no problems. Last year he had a partner, so I advise his tax office and they sent through the paper supplementary return. When I came to file his return online there was no where to put the partnership details that appear on the supplementary pages. I had to post this part of the return off and it was after 31st october. I submitted his and his partners return and paid the tax outstanding but now have £100 fine for failing to send the other part to them in time. Plus the other partner has also received a £100 fine.
Is it worth appealing that it was not clear that I wouldn't be able to submit the supplementary pages online. Even a chartered accountant friend of mine wasn't aware that you couldn't use the hmrc website to submit the partnership supplementary pages.

You can file the partnership supplementary pages online (that is the partnership pages that form a part of an individuals tax return).
The mail partnership tax return (SA800) cannot be filed online using HMRC software, you have to purchase 3rd party software to file that online. This is stated on the front page of the SA800 Partnership Tax Return.
Are you sure it's the supplementary pages you are referring to, or is it the SA800 you are talking about?0 -
Yes I mean the SA800 which is the partnership return. I filed the individual returns but could no find out in time how to file this on line. The more I find out the less I know!0

Not much chance of a successful appeal, the paper tax return says on the front page, you need 3rd party software to file online.
The hmrc website says you need 3rd party software to file online.
HMRC will feel they have advised you. He's not an accountant - he's a charlatan0 -
Sorry but i have to agree with the above posts, you need third party software to file patnership tax returns online, or you make sure you get them in the post before the 31/10. HMRC have a list of "reasonable excuses" for late filing of returns, and unfortunately not being aware of their daft systems isn't one of them (i've just done 3 tribunals where ignorance was the defence, and all three were lost!) You'd need to have been seriously ill (with valid sick notes, we're taking broken bones, not just a cold)/suffering bereavement etc inorder to fight the penalty. They really have made it VERY difficult to avoid the penalties.
