Bank Charges + debt collection

Hello everyone.
I use to hold a bank account with a high street bank. I received some charges on this account (going back 3, 4 years, maybe more) and I felt they were unfair.. I advised the bank I would not be paying them, and moved to another bank.
I have now received a letter all this time later, from a debt collection company asking me to pay this money back before they go to the county court, they have advised they are requesting a copy of my credit file from Experian, and will be in contact soon.
Now I am under the impression I am going to have to pay back these bank charges etc or I am going to end up with a CCJ ? Which I don’t want.
How can I make sure these people asking for the money have the right to collect it as I have heard in the past of people paying the wrong companies etc etc.
Any advice anyone can give would be very welcome.
Thanks all for your time

Send them the prove it letter - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=11570893&postcount=2
They will need to provide proof it was you, your account and the reasons for the outstanding debt.
You should be able to offer a payment per month, pay in full or a full and final settlement. - http://www.nationaldebtline.co.uk/england_wales/factsheet.php?page=24_full_and_final_settlement_offers
Keyword is they may attempt court action which would be a CCJ, if you don't want it, i do advise you pay as you did run up the charges. It would have to have been 6 years for the debt to be statute barred
If you believed the charges to be unfair you should have reclaimed them rather than left them, as now getting them back is near to impossible since the high court ruling in November.Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies0 -
Thanks for the feedback. I am willing and want to pay back the charges as you said I run them up, well even if I do think they were unfair. But anyway I just want to make sure I pay back the right people.0

They should prove that they are either acting on behalf or own the debt.Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
