Council Tax Queries

Hello there!

1st post - so be gentle!

Thanks to this site, I have just received notification that my house (as I correctly suspected) was in the wrong council tax band and should have been in Band F and NOT in Band G!!

I have three questions (probably more to follow)!

1) Will ALL of the overpayment of previous years be repaid - this will amount to several thousand pounds?

2) Will any repayment be automatic or do I need to apply to the local council now that the VoA has re-banded the property?

3) Is there a site that will tell me the previous years' council tax bands so that I can see what my overpayments have totalled?

A trawl of the web this morning has only found the previous two years figures and I need to go back to 1996!

Local council is Sheffield.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks

Dave

The reduced council tax band will be applied bac as far as the date of the banding reduction and applied to your council tax account . Its not as simple as calculating the difference between two bands if you have ever received council tax benefit or any discounts as these need to be re-calculated.

You need to request any refund from the council but it can take several weeks for them to get official confirmation from the VOA of the band reduction.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • Thanks for the swift reply.

We don't receive any council tax benefits or rebates.

So, should I be looking at a refund of the fully-backdated total overpayment?
