Because she doesn't understand it and has trouble explaining what it is she thinks is wrong.
[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

I just worry that by you doing your wifes work you could have undermined her to her boss and effectively damaged any further potential within the company (if there was one)

I asked whether the pay date had changed yesterday because it still looked a bit suspect based on what you were saying so had a sneaking suspicion yesterday wouldn’t be the last of this Post !!!
But I think it all makes sense now with the new pay date of 15th. instead of end of month.
If I understand it correctly, your wife was paid for January on the last day of January?
She would normally be paid for February at the end of February but instead has only been paid for the first two weeks in February?
I think her next (new) pay day will be in two weeks time 15th. March (instead of end of February), but as she is being asked to wait another two weeks extra before her next payment, she has been advanced the sub of £80 for the last two weeks in February.
I think your wife’s problem is trying to equate the £80 to her normal net pay, don’t, it’s not, it’s just a loan for the extra 2 weeks wait before next pay day, it could have been £50 or £500.
You say your wife gets £100 for two weeks and is a non tax-payer?
For arguments sake, let’s also say she gets £100 net for the same period.
I think your March payslip will show two weeks for March paid on 15th (£100 for March 1-15th.) PLUS the last two weeks in February (£100), LESS the £80 loan leaving a net of £120 so for the 4 weeks from 16th Feb to 15th. March, you will have received £200 (your normal net pay) but in two instalments.
The £80 could have been £100 in which case only £100 NET would be paid to you on 15th. March but overall, its still only your normal net pay for 4 weeks of £200 ????
