I cannot help with the immediate problem but I do empathise. Like you I was left entirely alone (for a week) and never had the favour returned.

I now book up leave well in advance. In December 2009 I booked slots of annual leave through to the end of August 2010.

I cannot always predict when I will need the time off but booking in a week here, a week there, throughout the year has certainly forced the situation to be better managed and means I'm a happy bunny.

Perhaps it's genuine. The Boss might be trying to do the right thing here you know. If someone has informally asked for the holiday before you, then the Boss appears to have given them until the end of the week to decide a definate yes or no because he knows you want the same days. By asking you to hold fire on the definate he's giving the first-comer a chance to confirm.

When you sent that formal request email I think it was a mistake to be fair, the Boss asked you to wait a few days. If the situation were turned around and the boss gave you a few days to decide, then gave the holiday to someone else how would you feel?

I appreciate what you are saying, and I admit, I hadn't looked at it that way until now. However, he wanted me to hold off for another 2 weeks, until a week before the days I wanted off.

Personally, if I was an employer, the first one in with a formal definite request would get the holiday, otherwise everyone could be left waiting for one person who may or may not want to book holiday each month.
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

It sounds as though your workplace needs a better holiday booking system - preferably one that is open to scrutiny.

At my workplace, you have to give advanced notice of the blocks of leave that you intend to take during the forthcoming year. Odd leave days don't have to be pre-booked. Only two people are allowed leave at any one time.

28 days before the break you have to put in a leave form and the manager checks that it has been pre-booked by looking on the Leave Rota.

And that's it. No arguments - we all know where we stand.

Of course there's lots of date swopping and changes during the course of the year - but it seems to work fairly. And managers love the system because they don't have to mediate between competitors for the same date - it's all sorted out between ourselves at the start of the year. Easy.
