Wescot & Virgin Media

I've had a lovely letter today from Wescot, on behalf of a Virgin Media account I closed 6 months ago.
I closed the because I was moving home, and was asked to pay the remaining balance on the account and the "disconnection fee" over the phone - which I did.
Now Virgin are claiming that I was "misinformed" and the disconnection fee still applied on the account. However, they didn't try to get in touch with me via the Virgin e-mail address I was provided. The only way I would have known about this is if I had logged in and checked my bill online (which I didn't do due to the advice that everything was paid).
The outstanding 'debt' due is only £13.39.
Should I go through the whole complaints procedure or just get rid of it quickly - pay it and accept that it's dented my credit rating?
It's so frustrating

has it affected your vredit rating? have you checked?
this type of charge is not always recorded with CRA's.
Do have any confirmation that you stlled in ful such as a final bill which you can prove was paid by corresonding bank records or recipt for payment from virgin?0 -
I haven't checked my credit rating yet no, but I guess I'm just assuming the worst at the moment.
I spoke to someone at Virgin who has explained that their record show the amount I paid when I cancelled was the outstanding balance and the next months monthly payment (as it would take a few days before everything was cut off). Therefore, the bill for the month after shows the £23.50 disconnection fee minus the overpayment for services I didn't receive.
I didn't get a final bill/receipt of payment, or "goodbye" letter from Virgin as I had left the property and didn't get my post forwarded.0 -
i can't tell you what to do but if it was me i'd take a look at my credit file, if anything negtive had been recorded i'd fight it to try and get it removed but if there is nothing on your credit file then it might be alot easier to bung them thirteen quid to !!!! off...
Depends if you see it the same way as me though.....0 -
Checked my credit report (for the first time - little confused!).
My old address isn't showing as linked with my current, but then Wescot found me via Experian so I would assume the address could be linked, as I have had to check through Equifax.
Bah!
I totally see where you're coming from, it's a lot of hassel for only £13. I'm not applying for anything big like a mortgage for at least 3 years and the rest of my file is pretty much spot on. So it's probably just as easy to pay it and get it out of the way.
Thanks for helping me weigh up the options!!0
