Aktiv Kapital - confusing letter!

Hi, I hope I'm posting in the correct place here - today I got a letter from a company called 'Aktiv Kapital', thanking me for clearing my account and that they were pleased to receive my recent payment.

Now, I have never heard of these people and have no idea what they were talking about. When I was 18/19 I got myself into a bit of trouble with a few credit cards (I know, stupid) and paid one off, paid another one off with a loan when they caught up with me three years later, and just couldn't afford to pay the other one. Now I'm 29 so ten years has passed - I thought the debt was wiped after six years if none of it was paid - am I wrong? Even if I'm right, this doesn't explain the letter. I was living at a different address when I paid the last one and thought all the old debt problems were finished with.

Does anyone have any idea what this letter is all about? I definitely didn't pay them anything!

Keep the letters and don't do anything. Just hold fire.

Debts with no written acknowledgement or no payment are statute barred (unless there is an outstanding CCJ on the debt) - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=11571227#post11571227

  • Thanks, I will definitely hold on to the letter - it is really weird though - it says 'amount currently outstanding: £0.00' and it's a really nice letter - saying thanks and all.....

Thanks for the advice on the debt being statute barred too!
  • Sounds to me as if they are fishing to try to get information about you. Don't contact them in any way, if they write to you again post up here, and Never phone them.

    Hi All,

This is my first post on these forums so I hope it is ok to tag onto this question....
I have received a letter from Credit Security Limited today. It says re: Aktiv Kapital (UK) LTD - GE Capital Bank LTD.
It is a very short 'DEMAND' letter saying I must send them £298.59 immediately. It makes no reference as to what the debt was for.
The thing I need help with is this: The letter is addressed to my maiden name which hasn't been used for nearly a decade! (I got married 8 years ago and divorced 18 months ago but have retained my married name due to having a child). The other thing is I have moved house several times since having my maiden name plus I was declared Bankrupt In January '09 due to becoming disabled & having to give my job up. I didn't owe too much but couldn't repay my debts with no income.
I don't know what to do about this letter. Do I ignore it & risk some scary debt collector turning up on my door step within 7 days? Do I try to speak to them & explain the above? I'm scared to make contact as I think it will just go on & on if I acknowledge the letter. If the debt was from at least 8 years ago plus I'm now a discharged Bankrupt how do I stand?

    Thanks in advance ....

Ignore them, they a a bunch of chancers. They can not turn up on your doorstep without appointment, therefore make no appointment.

They have been making all sorts of threats against me for 8 or 9 months now, hollow threats. All mouth and no trousers as the saying goes.

Similarly, the letters they send give little or no details about the supposed debt. If you did have a debt from way back, it will be statute barred by now.

Thanks Bob. It really worries me when I receive letters like that. They would stand more chance of getting money out of people if they actually put on the letter what the debt was for! Thankfully I don't technically owe anything now ... doesn't stop the dodgy debt companies though I guess. It's amazing how far these debts can be sold on!

    Take Care ....

No, getting letters from these scumballs is not one of lifes pleasures. If it starts to get to you, and you are certain the debt is either not yours or is statute barred, then there is a " Prove It " template letter somewhere on this site yo can send.

It is up to them to prove the debt is yours, not for you to prove it is not.

Me, I just continue to let them waste their time and money sending me pointless letters!

aktiv have been writing to me for a year or so, i just ignore all the letters they send me,, the first time they wrote i rang them as they were asking me for £700, i had no idea from when or what the debt was for,, i was told it was from 1995 and the debt was being collected on behalf of DFS the sofa company, i did get a sofa from them but it was paid for in full, after the phone call i did ring DFS and asked them if they could help, the nice bloke at DFS got up my details from way back then and confirmed i had paid in full, he also said about with the debt being so old even if i did owe it there wasn't much they could do it get it,,.
I got another letter off aktiv the week after thanking me for contacting them, so i rang again this time aktiv said it was for a storecard at DFS i have never had one so i was advised to contact the police and get a crime number as it must be identiy theft,, i have not replied or spoken to them since although they write to me monthly, not sure if its the right thing to do but a woman i spoke to on one of the calls may of slipped up and said they could not take me to court over this debt,
