a friend of mine bought toothpaste from an american

website which i believe i have seen advertised on facebook too . she bought toothpaste to whiten teeth and without reading all their terms and conditions it made her subscribe to £300 worth of magazines which she did not need. in the terms and conditions in small it said that if she did not cancel that a direct debit would be set up. instead of paying maybe £10 she ended up paying £300. she is embarrassed to tell her other half. can she do anything about it. it seems terrible that companies like this are not regulated.

Can she not cancel the direct debits now and try to claim something back with the CAB? may not work but worth a try? sounds like a scam site and may be tricky to get out of it, but at £290 I'd definitely be trying to!

ask her to call her bank and tell them that the company took the money when they shouldnt, they will reverse the Direct debit

I'm embarrassed to say that i also fell for a tooth whitening scam that was advertised on Facebook. It was advertised as a free trial. But in the pages and pages of terms there in small print in the middle, was a line that i obviously didnt read (be honest who does?). When my credit card bill came through i had been deducted with around £65.00 i think it was.

I contacted my credit card company to cancel it, but i couldnt because it was in the small print. I immediately e-mailed the company and told them not to make any further deductions. As in my case i would have been tied into a monthly deduction if i didnt cancel.

Its terrrible that these companies can get away with this. At least it wasnt £300 for me. Wouldnt have wanted to tell my husband that! You could try contacted trading standards.

Make sure you've cancelled with the company so that you're not going to get any more deductions made from your card.
