Tesco sent me chicken with very short use-by date

Hi everyone,

I just wanted some of your thoughts on this. I'm not sure if I'm in the wrong or if Tesco are in the wrong!

Basically, I shop with Tesco for my 'big' shop about 2 or 3 times a month. I'm usually happy with the service but today I had a few problems but not sure if I have any right to make a complaint.

I live on my own and have one of those small half fridges. I always buy meat or chicken and this time I bought 3 packs of chicken for a tenner. Now, one pack's use by is the 28th, which is reasonable. The use by date on two of them is for tomorrow! That's a lot of chicken for my to eat in one day!

If the use by date is going to be that short then I'd at least expected to be discounted, don't you agree??

Do other people get meat, chicken or fish with such short use by dates?

I also ordered some smoothie ice lollies and they were almost melted through, like soft sand in water... if that makes sense! I've taken about 40 minutes walking from my local Sainsbury's with a similar product and they never get melted like that.

I appreciate your thoughts!

I get meat from a butchers thats the place to get meat!

If you have got any problems, questions about meat then you can ask the butcher you bought your meat from cant you? Simple.

  • Freeze one pack?

  • I would phone and complain - I've done it many, many times when the use by date has been short (a couple of times it's even been the same date as delivery!)

I've always received a refund for the item without question.

;) I have had this happen in the past - any problems give Customer Service a ring. Probably best to do this asap after your shopping is delivered. I have always found them to be very helpful. I once had a leg of lamb delivered on a Thursday with a use-by date of that same day. I didn't have room in the freezer to freeze it and take it out again for the Sunday, so I rang them and asked for their advice. They refunded the money I had paid for the lamb. The occasional problems I have had with home delivery (broken eggs, etc) have all been dealt with in this way. HTH:p

Hi thanks for the responses! I think I will go ahead and call, as much as I hate complaining!

I would put it in the freezer but I've only got a little fridge and no freezer just a tiny little ice box for just a couple of items, so I've no room for two packs of chicken.

I have been to my local butcher's but haven't got on, not as good and friendly as the one I used before I moved. I have been meaning to try one that is a short bus ride away but never get round to it!

    Thanks again for the advice!
  • As much as I hate Tesco today  I must admit that they've always been very good with refunding me on items with short dates. I usually email them, there's a form in the 'contact us' section that you fill out.

Yeah I sent them an e-mail in the end. I hope they do something about it.

Do they ever send out a free delivery or discount voucher instead of a refund?

No always a refund unless you've had a problem with a late delivery etc in which case it'll be money off your next shop

They should refund one of the chooks and they usually do. 1 day is awful. You can cook them both up today/tomorrow and eat it over the weekend. Once cooked it will last longer.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Yeah hope they refund at least one pack. I haven't had a response yet so will hopefully get one by end of the day tomorrow!
