Mushy peas

I serve fish and chips on Friday.

I like to make my own from dried peas, but do you think it is cheaper to either just buy them from asda or make them but using a recipe that uses frozen peas.......

hmmmmmm

We used to buy frozen mushy peas but they still needed a fair bit of cooking etc. We now buy mushy peas in cans. Much easier & cheaper.

I use a the "soak your own " type-"Leo" is one brand-they cost about 30p, and you just soak overnight. After soaking they really don't take long to cook-30 mins max. I the use whats needed and freeze the rest. I get 4-5 portions out of a pack.

Whitworths also do massive 1KG bagsof dried peas-about £1.

If you use "quick soak" dried peas they only need soaking for 2 hours but I prefer the other sort as I think the QS peas have had the outer shell of the pea removed, so less fibre and less tasty.

I find using dreid peas as economical way of eating mushy peas, which is just as well as I am slightly addicted. Also I find canned ready made mushy peas are not to my taste.

In a MP emergency a can of Farrows Marrowfat (not mushy) peas heated up, then mashed up after most of the juice has been drained off, makes a fine substitute.
