Mattress toppers - any good?

The old man slept in the guest room the other night (he was ill and coughing madly, I hadn't chucked him out!) and afterwards said that the mattress on the bed was... well, not exactly uncomfortable, but it's a cheap one with linked springs near the surface, and he definitely felt he could feel them occasionally.
As there's nothing worse than staying in someone else's uncomfortable bed for the weekend and then going home shattered as a result, I thought I'd treat my guests to a new mattress... until I saw the price:eek:
I've read about these mattress topper things which are like a thick underblanket-y thing (or some are foam) which are supposed to give your mattress a new lease of life. Trouble is, they're not 99p either, so I don't want to shell out and then find I needn't have bothered for all the difference they made. On the other hand, we're not exactly running a hotel, so it's not as if anyone would be sleeping in our guest bed for months on end.
Has anyone any experience of this/these? Any good? Recommendations? Caveats?
All answers gratefully received!

The 'memory foam' ones are very good. You can get them on ebay quite reasonably. I now have a memory foam mattress which I bought online (if you want to know where you can pm me, I don't think I'm allowed to do a link). I don't recommend feather toppers, they are bulky and heavy and you have to shake them daily to keep them comfy. After a while the feathers start to poke through too.Official DFW Nerd No 096 - Proud to have dealt with my debt!0

I got the Love2Sleep mattress topper from Argos. £29.99 for double size. Was very pleased with it, and it washes up a treat too. Mind you our mattress wasn't too uncomfortable, but I reckon it's made it better. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0

Our mattress was uncomfortable and couldn't afford a topper so am using a spare duvet, it has made a big difference.0

I have a memory foam topper on our bed & I love it.
I used to go to bed with slight lower back pain (office chair) & wake up with it feeling worse. Now it's gone in the mornings.
I spent just under £100 on line for our double & worth every penny.0 -
We bought the Thermofit one from Costco - Got it on offer for £113.00 and worth every penny!.. We had visitors staying in May for a week, once they went home they couldn't settle so we have to but the Cosco topper and post it to SHetland! I have seen a lot of ceaper ones in Harveys ( bedding shop) they were about £50 i think but were not as heavy as the costco one - fine for a spare bed though! No Longer addicted to Boots! - Well not today anyway!! :blushing:

Ikea do lots of toppers, and they're quite cheap. Think they even do memory foam ones now.0
