Cleaning the hoover

Hi everyone

Can anyone tell me is it safe to wash the filters out of a bagless hoover, was thinking about just soaking them in stardrops and hanging them out side on the line, while its still fine cos mine i am ashamed to say really smell, and i hate hoovering - If i can;t looks like i will have to buy some new ones, and just priced them they are about £10.00 for the set, which i can not really afford at the moment.

Or does anyone have any ideas how to get rid of the smell.
