    dont forget your running costs have to come out of that £600 , ie fuel , the driving schools cut i did look at it once but the only way to make good money is to go independantly ie not with aa etc and the issue of working unsocaible hours, ie before work late evenings and weekends as people have to fit lessons in

    The £600 i worked out was after franchise fee, petrol, tax and NI - but was based on me being guaranteed 20 pupils a week - which is probably high expectations!!!

    This thread seems to sum up many threads that have been posted on here and elsewhere:

    I should state I have no experience of the industry, but it does seem that thanks to all the TV adverts and people getting made redundant there are a lot of people investing their money in driving instructor courses.

    Personally I would try and work out what it is specifically about your current job that bores you. Could you perhaps just work 4 days a week? Work from home part time? Ask for more challenging projects? Go part time and then get another more interesting part time job?

    What bores me is probably the fact ive being here nearly 4 years, so getting fed up but its making me think if this is the right career for me. Also other things happening here which is making me want to leave current position.

    Also 9-5 is boring me - i keep counting down the hours thinking GOD x hours to go, from the minute i get in, unless im out and about on diff sites

    Also the wage - in current position, and probably current job role, im never going to go up by more than a couple of hundred per year without moving onto something more advanced

    Couldnt work 4 days per week, as we work strange shifts and only two of us doing the same job. COuldnt work part time for same reason.

    Couldnt work from home, as couldnt do my job from home.

    Not a lot putting me off then :eek:
  • you have an asset: IT skills. Perhaps you could take it in a new direction. have you thought of teaching adults? You'd learn on the job with the PTLLS/DTLLS qualifications for adult teacher training. I just think if you are changing from IT to driving instructor, you have to learn about the technical stuff and running a franchise AND instructional skills. Whereas if you went into IT tutoring/teaching at least you already know what you know (depending on what kind of IT you already work in, of course!}

    The grass is always greener.

    From what i have read of some driving schools,they promise you will make £30k pa and many drivers get no where near that amount. I could see that running a driving school would involve weekends and antisocial hours whereas your current job doesnt.

    Frying pan>fire ?
    Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

    Dont be disheartened. Think about how you can develop your career within your current field by learning new tricks :)

  • From the op's posts, wanting a guaranteed income, regular hours, no travel, then I doubt if self employment is suitable.
