Concerns about son's nursery

  • What if there was a fire ? How would they know if all the children were accounted for if they haven't taken a register ?

No I wouldn't be happy with that at all, at my sons pre-school, they do the register as everyone goes in and there is another member of staff on the door when they let them in. If the staff do not recognise someone then they will question who they are before they let them in.

I understand that it is busy in the morning but surely that would be reason to be even more vigilant about who is coming in/out and where they are going?

The nursery my boys went to did a register in the 'quiet room' after all the parents had left. Before this you were expected to take your child in, hang up their coat and let them chose a 'play station' to play at before leaving. There were members of staff dotted around though and one 'greeting' at the door but more of a quick 'hello x' not taking a formal register or anything. Sometimes the 'door' staff would be busy talking to a parent or member of staff.

  • When I worked in a nursery there was always someone on the door meeting and greeting the parents and children. Kids would then come in and take their name and stick it to a board so we knew who was there.

I wouldn't with this situation either!

I am the manager of a nursery and i would say that are you sure he wasn't noticed coming in?
Quite often i am sat at my desk and even though i have a parent talking to me i would be watching the door and writing down the names of children as they come in even though i may not specifically acknowledge the child coming in (though usually i do with a good morning, parents are also required to 'sign' their child in with a time and signature.
We don't do the register until all the parents have gone.
Maybe it is the same there?

  • Oh no I really feel for you. Its hard enough leaving a child let alone when you feel they are not being looked after properly. I dont feel this is right. My son goes to a nursery attached to a school we are always greated by the nursery nurses, they always acknowledge my son and are normally all playing with the children and never stood around chatting. I would visit other nurseries if I were you. You need to feel comfortable with where you leave your child. Hope it works out ok for you :)

It doesn't sound right at all, and you were right to want something done about it.

My son's nursery has someone in the cloakroom who greets all the children by name when they come in, then they ll go into a room where there is anothr teacher who helps them select their name and post it in a box

Also, the fact it is only his second day there, I would be expecting him to have a little extra attention being the new pupil..

I'd need a formal acknowledgement that the staff know my child's there before I left. You're not overreacting at all.

  • Thanks to everyone for your insight. I have phoned this afternoon and withdrawn him from the nursery. Pukkamum - no I'm sure noone took any notice of me or DS when we came in because I raised it with the manager, who acknowledged that there was a problem and that they would 'have a meeting about it'.

It's such a shame because I hoped he could attend the primary school the nursery is attached to when he turned 4 (it has a good ofsted report).

Dont let this put you off the school attached, being at the nursery should have no impact on your childs ability to go to the school and the staff will be completely different. Good look with finding a new nursery :)
