Was that meant to imply that Greeks are only employed in the public sector. Ever heard of shipping?

I think it's meant to imply that 30% of Greeks are employed in the public sector.

To put that into perspective, a little over 20% of UK workers are employed in the public sector (about 6,000,000 out of about 30,000,000 link). That includes people working for LloydsTSBRBSNRKB&B as per the NSO definition of a public sector employee.

If recent reports are to be believed, working for the Greek Government (or rather being employed and paid by them) is a quite spectacular rort* with many having second jobs they do in the private sector while rarely if ever attending their public sector job.

Far too many. In my day, if you hadn't got to it by the second sentence, then you were considered "gay".

Surprised that this occurs in the EU. I know for a fact that it is the norm in several 3rd world countries.

  • Clashes have broken out between police and protesters in Greece, as up to two million people continue to strike over austerity measures.
Police fired tear gas at a group of some 50 protesters on the edges of the rally.
It is the second general strike in two weeks and coincides with growing anger at the EU's response to the crisis.
More than half-a-million civil servants have reportedly abandoned their posts, leaving the country paralysed.
Trains and ferries have been cancelled, the country's airspace closed to all flights, and tourist attractions closed, leaving travellers stranded.

I've dealt with many first and second generation Greeks over the years, out of places such as Muswell Hill and Palmers Green.

Tax evasion is endemic amongst them to far greater degree than in the population at large. It seems to be in thier genome. Most are pretty wealthy in terms of assets but declared incomes are low.

I wonder if this mentaility is the same in Greece or just symptomatic of those entrepeneureal types that came here.

  • I did read that if all uncollected taxes were available to the greek government, they'd have no deficit and all this trouble would be unnecessary

I do agree just bailing them out is only putting off the problem and possibly prolonging and worsening it.
most likely much like all the recent saving the economy measures proposed or done
