Does anyone have any cheap, easy low GI recipes?

  • You can go GI without needing all new recipes, just change some old favourites and add 1 low GI item each meal.

    Consider traditional porridge oats or muesli for breakfast rather than packet cereals [nice aside: due to manufacturing processes Frosties have a medium GI compared with normal corn flakes which are high GI].

    Replace normal white potatoes with sweet potatoes or have pasta instead or keep to the little baby new potatoes. (Baked potatoes may be a dieters favourite but they have a very high GI due to the way they are cooked). If you are eating rice, choose basmati rice rather than normal long or short grain.
    If you think reality makes sense, you're just not paying attention!

    I've actually just signed up for a GI diet trial through a local hospital - hoping I get picked. 4 week trial - 2 weeks on low gi and 2 weeks on normal gi. will let you know how I get on...

    Flutterby - would love to try your chickpea recipe :-)

    I got my low GI recipe books from readit swapit. Might be worth checking out if you want some more recipe books.
    I have made my diet generally more low GI just by making sure I use wholemeal pasta, flour and brown rice whenever I cook and avoiding eating sugar. Making sure you are getting enough protein helps as well - I think its sposed to be somewhere between 25 and 30% on your plate, with 30% complex carbs and 30% veg - something like that anyway, I never really got into the measuring things, I just try and follow the principles.
  • Couscous is a good low GI option - and there's nothing as quick and simple to prepare.
    I made up some last night for dinner to go with a mung bean dahl and made sure I made extra, so today's lunch is couscous with salad.

    Dont have any recipes but I bought a Low GI loaf from Greggs last week - it was the nearest they had to granary. It was scrummy, highly recommended!
    ... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D
